Voice of Engineers Ep.7 | A Day with My Engineer Buddy!
Nov 20,2024
This episode’s guests are Huang Jiale and Tang Jieneng, a diagnostic test engineer and a bus test engineer, respectively. In the automotive industry, these two roles are often combined, so Huang and Tang’s work frequently overlaps, though each has their own area of expertise. Their positions complement each other, working together like “left and right hands.” Over time, this professional partnership evolved into a close friendship.
Don"t miss out on this opportunity to delve deeper into their journey! Tune in to the podcast or read the article for an insider"s perspective on his career and achievements.
Episode Transcript
[00:57] Please talk about how you met.
Tang : Our work involves similar tasks in bus and diagnostic testing, and our desks are often near each other. We’d often ask each other questions, and over time, we got to know each other well.
Huang : We joined the company around the same time, so ALTEN created the opportunity for us to meet and connect.
[01:13] Describe each other in 3 words.
Huang: Conscientious, optimistic, and studious. In his free time, Tang studies programming languages online to create automated test scripts, which he uses to increase efficiency at work.
Tang: Humorous, conscientious, and warm-hearted. When I first joined, I wasn’t very familiar with the industry’s testing software, so I frequently asked Huang for advices. He shared everything he knew and even connected me with senior colleagues for extra guidance, which helped me get up to speed.
[01:52] Tell us about your daily work routine.
Huang: I start each day by logging in, checking my task list, and verifying that all test samples and information are in order. Next, I allocate testing projects, and we often have meetings during this time to align on test specifications and issues. The actual testing work begins in the afternoon, where I execute test cases for various architectures. Typically, testing a single unit takes around 1–3 days. After testing, I summarize the results in our system. That’s my basic daily routine.
Tang: My previous job wasn’t in the automotive industry, so joining ALTEN as a bus test engineer was a cross-industry move. At first, I wasn’t familiar with the industry’s testing tools, but I needed to learn quickly. I sought guidance from my colleagues, including Huang, and with their help, I adapted to the job over time.
[02:42] What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced at work?
Huang: Developing automated test scripts has been my biggest challenge, as different samples require unique test cases, and I have to adjust scripts accordingly. Some programming languages were new to me, so I studied them online in my spare time. Gradually, I’ve become proficient in several mainstream programming languages, which has significantly improved my efficiency.

[03:59] What changes and growth have you observed in each other’s work so far?
Huang: When Tang first joined, he only knew Python, but he later learned Capl, which is used with Canoe software. He’s developed scripts to handle more complex tasks, which has improved his efficiency. He’s also become better at communication and teamwork. I admire his ability to manage his time effectively and reduce unnecessary overtime. Since joining ALTEN, he’s also gotten married and learned to balance work with family life, which I really admire.
Tang: I’ve noticed significant growth in Jiale’s work skills. Initially, he struggled with complex tasks, but now he handles them with ease. For example, at first, his diagnostic testing knowledge was limited, and his analysis could be biased. But with continuous learning and practice, he’s now proficient with various analysis tools and can quickly extract key data to support project decisions. Outside of work, he wasn’t interested in outdoor activities before, but he’s since started hiking and running, which we do together.
[05:53] If your roles were reversed, do you think the other person could do your job?
Huang: Since our test samples come from the same batch and there’s a lot of overlap in test cases, I think Tang could pick up my job with some initial guidance.
Tang: Huang has solid skills in communication testing, so I think he could quickly adapt to the testing methods and approach needed for my role. I’m confident he’d be qualified.
