AEA Vol 1.0

According to Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric, 50% to 80% of time in the workplace is spent on communication. As an engineer, various information needs to be communicated to colleagues in different functions, and mastering multi-level reporting lines and cross-departmental collaboration is a prerequisite for advancing in one's career path. In communication, information and ideas are important; At the same time, it must also be presented in a way that makes it acceptable to the recipient.

In 2024, the first AEA Workshop hosted by ALTEN China with the theme "Unlocking boundless communication potential" featured two experienced engineers in project communication management as keynote speakers, providing practical communication guidelines to our members.

AEA Guide

When it comes to project coordination, often involving written communication, adhering to the "5C" principle (Concise, Curious, Clear, Compelling, Compassionate) is paramount. By following these principles, one can effectively reduce misunderstandings and enhance communication efficiency.

When working across departments, it is crucial to distinguish "communication dimensions", which can be summarized as communication objects (internal and external), communication situations (formal and informal), communication tools (written and unwritten), and communication language (spoken and non-verbal language). For example, a multi-party meeting with clients is a typical formal communication scenario. When facing external communication objects, sending meeting minutes by email after the meeting can further clarify the communication conclusion and get the most direct feedback.

Communication management is a work that spans the whole life cycle of the project. In the early stage of the project, it is necessary to make the communication plan, initiate periodic meetings or establish reporting nodes; In the process of the project, it is also important to manage and monitor communication promptly to ensure that information is effectively conveyed.

The sharing of the two guest speakers inspired and enlightened the members present, and everyone demonstrated their communication skills in the games and debates. Compared with winning or losing, what is more meaningful is to quickly capture information and express accurately during communication, accept the other party's challenge and respond effectively in a short time.

According to surveys, approximately 80% of hiring managers believe that "effective communication" is one of the most crucial skills for job seekers, a ratio that might even be higher in the tech industry. Proficiency in communication greatly enhances work efficiency and quality in areas such as teamwork, project management, and client interactions. Hence, it's essential to recognize that being a "communication expert" not only provides a competitive edge but is also an essential element for becoming a well-rounded professional.

At ALTEN, we believe that engineers are not confined solely to domain expertise but also serve as bridges between technology and business realms. AEA is committed to the comprehensive development of engineers, empowering each individual to unleash their maximum potential.
